POINTERS FOR RESUME WRITERS


* Be sure there are no typographical errors.

* Include a Summary of your qualifications for the job you want, highlighting three to five of your greatest strengths.

* Target the resume to the job for which you are applying.  Use different resumes if you apply for different types of job.

* Focus on your accomplishments not your job duties. Use an Accomplishments Section which is best positioned immediately after the Summary Section.

* Use an appropriate resume length for your field (no more than 3 pages, preferably 2 pages). Remember resumes are intended to create interest in an interview by the prospective employer, and not to tell your life story or be a substitute for the interview itself.

* Target the resume to your career objective.  Don’t use an Objectives section unless you include a specific job objective. A generalized Objectives Section is to be avoided.

* Eliminate personal pronouns, such as I or we.

* Don’t say “references available upon request.” Have references on a separate page and available to prospective employers when needed. Be sure to include both home and work numbers, and the relationship of the referenced individual to you.

* Include hobbies and personal information only if they are relevant.

* Eliminate articles, such as “the”, “a” and “an”.

* Be consistent throughout the resume in the typeface and style you use, and add as much white space that is, unused space, to increase readability.

* List your employment in chronological order with the most recent employment first. Don’t assume the reader of your resume knows the size or product line of the “XYZ” company tell them.

*  If you are a fresh graduate, present your educational background near the top of your resume.
